Lombok’s coastline is lined with beautiful beaches. Nipah Beach sits just north of Senggigi and is a great place to relax for a day. There, you’ll find a long stretch of fine sand, nice spots to swim, opportunities to snorkel and kayak, and various amenities. Below are some details to help you plan a visit!
Getting to Nipah Beach
Nipah Beach sits about a 15-minute drive north of the heart of Senggigi. Taxi and rideshares like Grab, Gojek, or Bluebird are an easy option to reach the beach. We just caught a Bluebird taxi in Senggigi and requested another one through the app when we were ready to return. If you’re worried about cell service, you can always organize a return time with the driver and they are usually more than happy to come back to pick you up.
If you are planning to visit multiple beaches and sites in the area for much of the day, you could also consider hiring a driver. We hired a driver frequently used by a friend who lives in Lombok for an excursion on another day; however, you can also find drivers through agencies listed online or have your hotel organize one for you. They’ll just drop you off at Nipah and wait near the parking area until you’re ready to go.
Lastly, if you have your own car or motorcycle/scooter, there is ample parking just by the southern end of beach. If you intend to drive and park at the beach, there is a parking fee, though there isn’t always somebody at the entrance collecting the fee.
Visiting Nipah Beach
Fees
There are no entrance fees to access Nipah Beach. If you park at the beach, parking costs 5,000IDR for a scooter and 10,000IDR for a car.
Amenities
Restrooms: There are public bathrooms by the beach and spots to change and shower off. We didn’t use them, so we don’t know exactly how much they cost, but many public restrooms in Indonesia charge a small fee.
Food & Drink: There are many warungs lining Nipah Beach. Here you’ll find a variety of local dishes and fresh seafood. You can also buy snacks, beer, fresh coconuts, and other items from vendors lining the beach.
Gear Rentals: At Nipah Beach, you can rent kayaks and snorkeling gear. There are also some little huts available to rent if you want shelter for the day.
Tours: You can take a snorkeling tour if you’d feel more comfortable having a guide with you in the water who knows all the best spots. There are just a couple operators along the beach where a guide can take you just offshore to snorkel or even organize a Gili snorkeling excursion.
Beach Details
Nipah Beach is a long stretch of sand tucked between hills on Lombok’s coast. The beach is generally quiet as it isn’t well-known among tourists. However, it does get much busier in the evenings and on weekends among locals. You also may see some fishing boats coming and going through the day and many are often lined up on the shore.
The fisherman bring some of their fresh catch to the warungs lining the beach and nearby street. At these warungs, you can get a delicious local meal for a pretty good deal. Other than the handful of warungs, one of the only other establishments along the beach is the Seven Secrets Resort. This spot offers nice accommodation, spa treatments, snorkeling trips, various dining options, etc. Most of the amenities at this resort are exclusive to guests.
Nipah Beach is lined with trees, so there are some shady spots to hang out. When we were there, the beach was pretty clean, but depending on the tides and recent weather, we have seen many comments mentioning the trash on the shore and in the water. Sadly, this is common with many Lombok beaches.
There are some sandy spots to swim along the shore. As the tide gets lower, you’ll find more coral and rocks. The water wasn’t as clear and the variety of fish and coral weren’t quite as spectacular as off the Gili Islands, but we still enjoyed snorkeling here a lot. We saw a variety of fish and many turtles as well. If you’re interested in learning about turtles, there is a turtle conservation center where those who run it can tell you about their efforts and you can see some baby turtles in their care.
Nipah Beach is a great spot to watch sunset. You can also watch the sunset or take in the views from the viewpoint over the beach.
